This has been a very popular project for key stage 3 and you can make bottle coats from recycled pieces of fabric.
The bottle coats can be made in a variety of shapes and contain an insulating foil which you can buy from Homebase or B&Q.
To make each bottle coat you need a small piece of fabric, a small 10 cm zip, a pair of clips to secure the bottle coat to a bag or rucksack and something to insulate the bottle coat to keep drinks cool. Cost per bottle coat about 50p so not expensive!
Suitable for year 9 as students require skill to sew in zips, attach bottle coat arms and hoods, and add lining and clips, so this is a more complicated project than making a pencil case or cushion. Boys and girls really like this project - the bottle coat can be an army outfit, pretty pink coat or patchwork outfit - it is up to the students to invent their own designs.
Bottle coats can be decorated by using transfer paper images, needlepunching designs, applique on shapes, embroidery.
So this is a low cost project with lots of design potential. Have a go!
You can buy the whole project on CD - book, pattern and powerpoint.
